Voir

Hydrogen cars still two decades away: BMW

Joshua Dowling
January 26, 2008

THE head of BMW's clean-energy technology, Jochen Schmalholz, says hydrogen-powered cars are still 15 to 20 years away from being on the road "in significant numbers" and revealed the German maker is also working on an electric vehicle.

Schmalholz was in Australia this week to demonstrate a hydrogen-powered BMW that emits only water from the tailpipe. He also met the federal Minister for Climate Change and Water, Penny Wong, to brief her on BMW's research on the technology.

About 150 BMW guests in Melbourne were invited to take a short test-drive in the experimental car, of which 100 have been built. These will be distributed to VIPs in Europe and the United States for feedback. The cars are not for sale, they are on loan, and none will be distributed in Australia.

At present there are only five liquid-hydrogen refuelling stations in the world: one in the US and four in Germany.

"Distribution is the biggest hurdle to the hydrogen car," Schmalholz says.

Energy companies also need to find ways to create hydrogen more efficiently. At present, about 80 per cent of the world's hydrogen supply comes from natural gas or oil, he says. "We can move a car without any CO2 emissions but we just shift the problem to production of hydrogen. So, we need to find a way to produce hydrogen using electrolysis and solar energy. Hydrogen cars only make sense if we can produce green hydrogen."

The BMW test car can travel about 230km on hydrogen but, because BMW has developed a dual fuel system, the engine can also run on regular fuel, which gives a range of about 500km. The car's total driving range is therefore 730km.

Schmalholz agrees with comments made by the chief executive of General Motors, Rick Wagoner, at the Detroit motor show last week that electric cars will be a reality in the next five to 10 years. He says BMW is also working on an electric car but a decision on production is yet to be made.

"We will only bring this [electric car] if it makes sense," he says. "At the moment we are not really convinced it will work for BMW. But if it makes commercial sense and it makes sense to our customers, then we will do it."
